At D-Wing, we've been painting homes across the Fox Valley since 2001 and yet our process hasn't changed all that much. Thorough prep, quality products, clean detail work, and a final walkthrough before we call it done. We've stuck with the basics and here's what that actually looks like for you.
1) Starts With an On-Site Consultation
Before anything happens we come out to the property. We will walk the exterior with you, point out any areas worth addressing before paint goes on, measure the scope of the job, and put together an accurate estimate. You'll know exactly what's covered and what it costs before work starts.
2) Pressure Washing Comes First
Every job starts with a full pressure wash of the exterior. It's important that dirt, chalk, mildew, and loose surface material all come off before paint goes on. New paint over a dirty or chalky surface will not bond and will start failing faster than it should. The surface will then need to be fully dry before anything else moves forward.
3) Scraping and Sanding
Any areas where paint has cracked, peeled, or failed get scraped down to a stable surface and sanded smooth. This is the critical step that determines how long the paint job actually lasts. It's not glamorous but it's the most important part of the whole process. If there is rotted or damaged wood found during this phase it gets dealt with before painting begins - because painting over a compromised surface would just further bury the problem.
4) Caulking and Sealing
All gaps and joints around windows, doors, trim, and anywhere two different materials meet get re-caulked. Dried out old caulking that gets painted over is a water entry point. Fresh caulk seals out moisture before the topcoats go on.
5) Priming Bare Surfaces
Any bare wood exposed from the scraping process gets primed before a topcoat goes near it. Primer improves adhesion, blocks stains, and gives the final color a uniform base to go on evenly. Skipping primer on bare wood is a costly shortcut
6) Basecoats and Topcoats
With the surface properly prepared, the painting can then begin. We protect all landscaping, windows, fixtures, and surfaces not being painted before we start. Basecoats go on first, topcoats follow, working top to bottom across the exterior. Done right this means even coverage, clean lines, and a finish that holds up through whatever Illinois throws at it.
7) Trim and Accent Detail Work
Trim, accents, and detail areas get handled separately from the main field of the house. This is where a paint job either looks sharp or looks rushed. Clean lines around windows, doors, and architectural details are what make the difference between a job that looks professional and one that just looks done.
8) Final Walkthrough
When the job is complete we walk the exterior with you. You look at every section, we address anything that needs attention, and we're not done until you're satisfied.
One More Thing
Because D-Wing is a full exterior contractor, a painting job sometimes opens up a conversation about other things on the outside of your home. If we notice siding that needs attention or trim that should be replaced before paint goes on, we'll tell you. Of course, you're not obligated to do anything about it - but you will know it's there.
