Entry Doors
Let's start with the front door. It's one of the first things people see and a very important thermal barrier on the outside of your home. If your entry door is aging, warped, or no longer sealing, it's letting air and moisture in every single day whether you notice it or not.
Entry door material is the main decision. Steel is strong, secure, and holds up extremely well through Illinois temperature swings. Fiberglass mirrors the look real wood without the vulnerabilities - it doesn't rot, swell in humidity, or freeze during thaw cycles. And finally, wood is the premium aesthetic option and when properly maintained it's hard to beat, though it does commonly ask more of you over time.

Patio Doors
Patio doors are all about connecting your living space to the outside. Whether that's your deck, backyard, or your patio. Patio doors come in two main configurations and the right one depends on your space.
First of which is sliding doors. These don't require clearance to open which makes them the practical choice when furniture sits close or the opening is tight. They give you a clean unobstructed view and smooth operation.
Secondly would be french doors. These doors swing open and create a wider, more dramatic opening when both panels are in use. They work extremely well when you have the space for the swing and want something that feels more architectural.
Both come in energy efficient configurations with low-E glass and insulated frames. A patio door with a failing seal is one of the bigger sources of heat loss in a home during a Fox Valley winter, so getting the installation right matters just as much as choosing the right door.
Storm Doors

The benefit of storm doors is twofold. First, your entry door takes significantly less of a beating with a storm door in front, which meaningfully extends it's life. Second, the air pocket between the two doors acts as an additional thermal buffer. In colder months it's a second layer of protection and in warmer months, the retractable or interchangeable screen panels let air through without the bugs. It's easily one of the more cost-effective exterior upgrades available because the payoff is immediate and it protects something you already have.
